When PG&E Cuts Power to Petaluma, Your House Keeps Running

Automatic versus pulling the cord

A standby generator sits on a pad outside, watches the utility feed, and takes over on its own about thirty seconds after the lights go. The automatic transfer switch is the part that makes it safe: it physically disconnects your house from PG&E before it connects the generator, so nothing you produce ever backfeeds onto a line somebody is working on. You do not have to be home. That is the whole point for people who travel or who cannot be out in the yard at two in the morning.

The portable route costs less and works fine if you are willing to be hands-on. We mount an inlet on the exterior wall, run a dedicated feeder to your panel, and fit a mechanical interlock so the main breaker and the generator breaker cannot be on at the same time. Suicide cords and extension-cord webs across the kitchen floor are what we are getting rid of. Done this way it passes inspection, and it will not kill a lineman.

Sizing it to what actually has to run

Most of the sizing mistakes we get called out to fix come from guessing. A submersible well pump is the big one. Out past Chileno Valley and toward Two Rock, plenty of properties are on their own well, and that pump draws several times its running load for the first second it starts. A generator picked off a chart browns out and drops the whole thing. We measure it.

Then we go through the rest with you honestly. The refrigerator and the freezer full of meat. The furnace blower, because October outages get cold at night. Medical equipment, oxygen concentrators, anything that is not optional. The router and the modem, since half of Petaluma works from home now and a dead connection is a lost workday. Barns and shop compressors if you have them. Once we know that list, the size picks itself and you are not paying for capacity you will never touch.

Fuel, setbacks, and where the thing goes

Inside city limits, natural gas is usually the easy answer because the line is already at the house. We check that the meter can deliver the volume, since a generator stacked on top of a furnace and a water heater can outrun an undersized meter. On parcels without gas service, propane is the answer, and tank size and placement join the conversation along with how long you want to run before a refill.

Placement is not a guess either. The unit needs clearance from windows, doors, vents, and the property line, and exhaust has to point somewhere sensible instead of at your neighbor’s bedroom.
