Rohnert Park runs on the 101. People here drive to Santa Rosa, down to Novato and San Rafael, and a fair number keep going into Marin and the city. The SMART platform helps, but plenty of households still put fifty or seventy miles on a car every weekday. That is the whole argument for a Level 2 charger at home: you plug in at seven at night, you leave at six in the morning full, and you stop planning your week around a public stall on Redwood Drive.
The wiring side is straightforward. What is not always straightforward is the panel it lands on. A lot of these houses were built between the mid sixties and the early eighties, and the service that was sized for that decade is the service you still have. We check that first, before anyone talks about mounting hardware.
Work we handle in Rohnert Park
- Level 2 chargers on a dedicated 240 volt circuit
- Real load calculation before we quote the work
- Tract garage and carport runs, surface or fished
- Hardwired units and NEMA 14-50 receptacles
- Subpanel or service upgrade when the load calls for it
- City of Rohnert Park permit and inspection handled
Start with the panel, not the charger
A Level 2 charger is one of the largest continuous loads a house will ever carry. Most units are set somewhere between 32 and 48 amps, and code treats charging as continuous, which means the circuit gets sized at 125 percent of that. On a 200 amp service with a heat pump and a gas range, there is usually plenty of room. On an original 100 amp service in one of the older lettered sections, with an electric dryer and a resistance water heater already on it, there may not be.
So we run a load calculation on your actual house. Square footage, the appliances you really have, the ones you are planning to add. That number decides everything downstream. It is a twenty minute exercise that saves people from a charger that trips the main every time the dryer runs, and it is the difference between a quote you can trust and a number pulled out of the air.
If the calculation comes back tight, there are honest options short of a full service change. Load management devices let a charger and a dryer share capacity by shedding one when the other is drawing. A lower charger setting, say 32 amps instead of 48, still fills a commuter’s battery overnight with room to spare. We would rather explain that trade-off than sell you the biggest thing on the truck.
What the older panel brands mean here
Homes built across Rohnert Park’s lettered sections from the late sixties through the early eighties land squarely in the Zinsco and Federal Pacific Stab-Lok era. If we open your panel and find one, we will tell you plainly, and we will not dress it up. Both brands have a long documented history of breakers that fail to trip on a fault. Federal Pacific was the subject of a Consumer Product Safety Commission investigation and years of litigation afterward, and Zinsco panels have a well known pattern of bus bar deterioration that keeps a breaker from clearing properly.
That does not mean your house is in danger tonight, and we are not going to talk to you that way. It means we will not add a forty-something amp continuous load to a panel whose protective devices cannot be verified. There is no field test that gives you an honest answer on those breakers. The right move is to replace the panel, and then the charger goes on a service we can actually stand behind.
Running the circuit in a Rohnert Park garage
The typical layout here works in our favor. Attached garage, panel on the garage wall or just around the corner in the utility space, and a car parked ten or fifteen feet from it. Short runs mean smaller conductor and less labor, and it means the charger lands where you actually want it rather than wherever the wire could reach.
Where it gets more involved is the split-level and raised ranch stock, particularly around the F and H sections, where the garage sits at a different elevation than the panel and the run has to cross a framed floor system or climb through a knee wall. We look at that path before quoting so nobody discovers it halfway through the day. Detached garages and carports need a proper feeder, usually direct burial in conduit at the correct depth, and that is a different job than a fifteen foot run across a garage wall. We will say which one you have on the first visit.
Mounting matters more than people expect. The cable wants to reach both a driveway parking spot and the garage bay without dragging across the floor, and it wants to be at a height where you are not stooping every night in February. We hang the unit where it works for how you actually park, not where it is fastest to mount.
Hardwired or plug-in, and how much charger you need
Two common approaches. A hardwired unit is permanently connected, generally allows the higher amperage settings, and gives a cleaner install with nothing to work loose. A NEMA 14-50 receptacle lets you unplug and take the charger with you if you move, and it works with a lot of the units that ship with vehicles. If you go that route, the receptacle needs to be a commercial grade device, because the cheap ones are a known failure point under continuous load.
On speed, most Rohnert Park commuters need far less than they think. A 40 amp charger adds roughly thirty miles of range an hour. Over a ten hour overnight window that is three hundred miles, which covers a week of driving to Santa Rosa or a couple of round trips to the city. Paying for a 48 amp circuit and possibly a service upgrade to fill a battery you empty by a third each day is money spent on nothing. We size to your commute, not the spec sheet.
Permits and the serviceability inspection
EV charger work in Rohnert Park is permitted work. We pull the electrical permit with the City of Rohnert Park Building Division, schedule the inspection, and meet the inspector on site. That paperwork is what makes the circuit real to an insurer, and it is the first thing a buyer’s inspector asks about when the house sells.
There is a wrinkle worth knowing about if the job grows into a service change. The City requires a serviceability inspection for residential main electrical service replacement, with the results provided in writing to the City and attached to the permanent permit record. That is not a hurdle, it is just a step, and it is one we handle as part of the job rather than handing you a form and wishing you luck. Same with PG&E, who has to pull and reset the meter on a service change. Sequencing that properly is what keeps your power off for hours instead of days.

Work that often comes with a charger install
What a finished charger install looks like

Charging that gets sized before it gets sold
The work that lasts is the work that was sized, permitted, and done slowly enough to get right.
Licensed & Permitted
CA licensed, insured, and bonded. Work that needs a permit gets one, and gets its final inspection.
Sized, Not Guessed
A real load calculation decides the work, including what you plan to add later.
We Know These Sections
The lettered sections were built in waves, and each wave asks for different work.

Trusted across Sonoma County
“A breaker kept tripping in our older home. They diagnosed it in under an hour after another company couldn’t. I won’t call anyone else now.”
“Needed a panel upgrade for a new hot tub. They handled the entire job including the permit. The new panel is incredibly tidy.”
“Installed a Tesla charger in our garage. Seamless from the first call to the final inspection. Professional, clean, and they explained everything.”
