Petaluma Home Charging

Level 2 Charging, Wired Right for Your Petaluma Garage

We size the circuit off a real load calculation, run it clean to wherever the car parks, and close the permit with the City.

Plenty of Petaluma drivers start out topping up at the public chargers along the 101 corridor, and it works until it doesn’t. You plan errands around a stall being open, you sit there while it feeds the car, and you pay a rate set by whoever owns the plug. A Level 2 charger in your own garage flips that around. The car fills overnight while you sleep, and the only trip you make is out to the driveway.

Public charging still earns its place on a run to Sacramento or down through Marin. For daily driving between the east side, downtown, and a job over the hill, home charging covers it with room to spare.

Start with the panel, not the charger

The first question is never which charger to buy. It is what your service can actually carry. We run a load calculation on the existing panel, counting the range, the dryer, the water heater, the air conditioning, and whatever else is already drawing, then see what headroom is left for a 40 or 48 amp circuit.

Here is the honest version on 100 amp services, which a lot of older Petaluma houses still have. Sometimes a charger fits fine, especially in a home running gas heat, a gas range, and a gas water heater. Sometimes the math is close, and a load management device solves it by pausing the car when the dryer kicks on so the two never stack. And sometimes the calculation says no, and the right answer is a service upgrade before the charger goes in. We tell you which of those three you are in before you spend a dollar, not after.

Tesla, J1772, NACS, and what actually matters

The connector question sounds bigger than it is. A Tesla Wall Connector is a tidy choice if the household is all Teslas. If a second vehicle might be a Ford, a Rivian, or a Hyundai, a universal charger with a J1772 cable plus a NACS adapter keeps every option open. Either way the circuit behind the wall is the same, so pick the unit you want and we will wire for it.

Detached garages and long runs

Older lots around town put the garage at the back of the property, sometimes a good distance from the panel in the house. Those runs are routine for us. Past roughly 100 feet we size the conductors up so voltage drop does not rob the car of charging speed, and we look hard at how the garage is fed. A detached building on a small existing feeder often needs that feeder addressed before it can host a charger, which is a very different job from adding a subpanel breaker. We would rather find that on the walkthrough than halfway through the install.

Permit, Inspection, Rates

The parts most people don’t think about

A charger install is a permitted 240 volt circuit, not an appliance you hang on the wall. We handle the paperwork and set the car up to charge when power is cheap.

City Permit Pulled

We file with the City of Petaluma and meet the inspector so the circuit is on record.

Load Calculation First

Numbers before hardware, so nobody finds out the panel is short after the drywall closes.

Time-of-Use Set Up

PG&E EV rates reward overnight charging. We schedule the charger before we leave.

The Owner Shows Up

Same person from the first call through the final inspection sign-off.

Good to Know

Questions Petaluma drivers ask

Can a 100 amp service in Petaluma run a Level 2 charger?
Sometimes. We run a load calculation first. If the numbers are close, a load management device that pauses the car when the range or dryer is running often makes it work without a service upgrade. If the numbers are not close, we tell you that instead of forcing it.
Do I need a permit for an EV charger in Petaluma?
Yes. Petaluma requires a permit for the new 240 volt circuit. We pull it, meet the inspector, and hand you the signed record when it closes.
Should I get a Tesla Wall Connector or a universal charger?
If your household will only ever drive Teslas, the Wall Connector is clean and simple. If a second car might be a Ford, Hyundai, or Rivian, a universal unit with a J1772 cable and a NACS adapter covers both. The wiring behind the wall is the same either way.
How far can you run the circuit to a detached garage?
Longer runs are routine on older Petaluma lots. Past roughly 100 feet we size the wire up for voltage drop, and if the garage has its own feeder we check whether that feeder can carry the charger before adding to it.
Will charging at home spike my PG&E bill?
Not if you charge on off peak hours. Every charger we install gets a schedule set the day it goes in so the car pulls power overnight rather than during the expensive late afternoon window.
How fast will my car charge?
A 40 or 48 amp Level 2 circuit typically adds 25 to 40 miles of range per hour depending on the vehicle. For most Petaluma commutes that means a full battery every night on a few hours of charging.
