More Service for a Petaluma Panel
Sixty amps was plenty in 1948. It is not plenty now. We size, permit, and install the service your Petaluma home actually runs on today.

Petaluma has two kinds of panel problem, and they sit on opposite sides of the river. West of the freeway, in the Victorians and the pre-war bungalows off D Street and Western Avenue, we still open doors on 60 and 100 amp services with a fuse block where a main breaker ought to be. East of it, in the tract neighborhoods that went up from the seventies through the nineties, the amperage is usually fine and the panel brand is the issue.
Either way the fix is a service upgrade done to current code, with the permit pulled and the utility work scheduled. We do that work ourselves, and the person who looks at your panel is the person who replaces it.
Panel work we handle in Petaluma
- 60 and 100 amp services stepped up to 200 amps
- Zinsco and Federal Pacific replacements
- Service entrance, mast, and meter socket rebuilds
- Subpanels for garages, ADUs, and shops
- PG&E disconnect and reconnect scheduling
- Whole-house surge protection at the panel
The westside problem: not enough service
An older Petaluma house was wired for a refrigerator, a few lamps, and a radio. The people living in it now run a heat pump, an induction range, a dryer, a home office, and a car that wants to charge overnight. A 60 or 100 amp service cannot carry that, and the house tells you so: breakers that trip when two things run at once, lights that dip when the well pump or the AC kicks on, a panel that feels warm, or a cover that has been full for years with tandem breakers doubled up in slots that were never rated for them.
On these houses the panel is usually only half the job. The mast, the meter socket, and the conductors coming off the drop are all the same age, and a new panel bolted onto a tired service entrance is a patch, not a repair. We look at the whole path from the utility connection to the last breaker and tell you plainly which parts have to change and which are fine to leave.
The eastside problem: the panel brand
Homes built in Petaluma between roughly 1970 and the mid-nineties often carry a Zinsco or a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panel. Both are worth naming honestly. Federal Pacific breakers were the subject of a lengthy Consumer Product Safety Commission investigation and later litigation over breakers that failed to trip on an overload, and Zinsco panels have a documented pattern of bus bar deterioration that keeps a breaker from clearing a fault. Neither brand is manufactured today, replacement breakers are hard to source, and plenty of insurance carriers and home inspectors flag them during a sale.
That does not mean your house is about to burn down, and we are not going to talk to you that way. It means a protective device you are counting on may not do its job on the day it matters, and there is no way to test that reliably in place. We replace them with a current listed panel, and we say so calmly.
All-electric loads and the case for 200 amps
Two hundred amps covers the great majority of Petaluma homes comfortably. Where it does not, there are honest options short of a bigger service, including load management devices that let a charger and a dryer share capacity intelligently. We would rather explain that trade-off than sell you the largest thing on the truck.
Permits, PG&E, and the day itself
A service change is a coordinated job, not a swap. We pull the electrical permit with the City of Petaluma building division, schedule PG&E to pull the meter, replace the equipment, then get the city inspection and the utility reconnect. Sequencing it properly is what keeps your power out for hours instead of days, and it is where unpermitted work causes real trouble later, because a buyer’s inspector will ask for the final on that panel.
On the day, you will know the outage window ahead of time. We protect the wall and the floor below the panel, label every circuit as we land it, and leave the interior neat enough that the next electrician can read it. Before we go, we walk you through the new panel so you know where your main is and what the AFCI and GFCI breakers are doing when one of them trips.

Work that often follows a panel upgrade
What a finished service looks like

Panel work that passes the first time
Service changes are the job where shortcuts show up years later, at the worst moment. We do them slowly and correctly.
Licensed & Permitted
CA licensed, insured, and bonded. Every service change gets a permit and a final inspection.
Sized, Not Guessed
A real load calculation decides the service, including what you plan to add later.
We Know These Blocks
Westside Victorians and eastside tract stock ask for different work. We have done both.
