You Bought a Westside Victorian. Here Is What Knob and Tube Actually Means.
Knob and tube is the original wiring in most pre-1930 Petaluma houses: two separate conductors on ceramic knobs, no ground. It is not an emergency by itself. What makes it a problem is a hundred years of additions, buried insulation, and ungrounded three-prong outlets somebody added later. Find out what is live, find out what is abandoned, then decide.
The inspection report came back and there was a line in it about knob and tube wiring, and now you are reading about attic fires at eleven at night. Take a breath. We work in these houses every week, from the blocks off D Street to the ones up on Keokuk, and the honest answer is more boring than the internet makes it sound.
What it actually is
It was good work. The separation kept the conductors cool, the ceramic did not burn, and plenty of it has been sitting in Petaluma attics for a hundred and twenty years doing exactly what it was asked to do. In 1905 it was asked to run a few lamps and maybe an iron. That is the whole point.
Why it is marginal now
Four things changed, and none of them are the copper’s fault.
There is no ground. The system was built with two wires, hot and neutral, and nothing else. A ground gives fault current somewhere safe to go and it is what makes a surge protector or a modern appliance behave the way its manufacturer intended. Without it, a fault inside a metal-cased tool or a lamp has nowhere to go except through whoever is holding it.
The insulation gets brittle. The original conductors were wrapped in rubber and cloth. Near heat, near a light fixture, near a hundred summers in an uninsulated attic, that wrapping dries out and crumbles. We have pulled knob and tube where the covering came off in flakes and left bare copper an inch from a nail.
Then somebody insulated the attic. This is the one that actually matters. Knob and tube depends on open air around the conductors to shed heat. Blow cellulose or fiberglass over the top of a live run and you have wrapped a heating element in a blanket. Half the westside houses we open up had insulation added in the seventies or eighties, right over live wire, by people who had no reason to know better.
How to tell what you have
You can learn most of this yourself in twenty minutes without touching anything.
Go look in the basement or the crawlspace first, because that is where the wiring is exposed and at eye level. You are looking for two separate wires running parallel a few inches apart, sitting on white ceramic spools nailed to the joists. If it is bundled inside one gray or white jacket, that is modern cable and you are looking at a later remodel.
Then check the attic if you can get up there safely. Same look, but pay attention to whether insulation is piled on top of the runs. Do not move anything and do not step between the joists.
Third, buy a plug-in receptacle tester at any hardware store on Petaluma Boulevard. Plug it into every three-prong outlet in the house. If it reads open ground, that outlet is a two-wire circuit with a three-prong face on it. A house full of open grounds tells you a lot before anyone opens a wall.
What you cannot tell from the crawlspace is how much of it is still energized. That is the piece that decides everything else, and it takes a meter.
Live versus abandoned
Plenty of the knob and tube in these houses is dead. Somebody rewired the kitchen in 1962, pulled new circuits, and simply left the old wire stapled to the joists because removing it meant opening plaster. It looks alarming and it is doing nothing at all.
So the real question is never “does this house have knob and tube.” It is “which of it is live, what is it feeding, and how was it joined to everything that came after.” That is a testing job, not a guessing job, and it is why we bring a meter rather than a flashlight and an opinion.
What your insurance carrier is going to ask
You will probably hear from your carrier before you hear from anyone else. Carriers have gotten specific about knob and tube in Sonoma County, and the questions are consistent: is there active knob and tube in the home, how much, and has a licensed electrician evaluated it.
The options ladder, honestly
There are three real paths and the right one depends on your house and your timeline.
Targeted replacement. If the live knob and tube is limited to a few circuits, say the upstairs bedroom lighting and two outlets, we replace those runs and leave the rest of the house alone. This is the smallest job and it is the right answer more often than people expect. It also satisfies most carriers, since what they care about is active knob and tube, not wire lying dead in a wall.
Room by room. When the original system is still feeding a good part of the house, we rewire in stages, a room or a floor at a time, spread out over months if that is what the budget wants. You keep living there. Each stage gets permitted and inspected and you are never carrying an unfinished system.
All of it, during a remodel. If you are already opening walls for a kitchen or a bathroom, that is the cheapest hour of rewiring you will ever buy, because the demolition is already paid for. Why splicing onto it yourself is a bad night
This is the part where we stop being relaxed about it. Nearly every knob and tube failure we have been called out to trace started as a modern splice onto old wire, done by a homeowner or a handyman who tapped a new outlet or a bathroom fan off a run that was already up there.
If you take one thing from all of this: do not add to knob and tube. Do not tap it, do not extend it, do not bury it. Everything else is a scheduling decision.

Questions we get from new owners of old houses
Do I have to rewire the whole house to get insured?
Usually not. Most carriers care about how much knob and tube is still energized, not how much is sitting dead in the walls. Targeted replacement of the live circuits plus a licensed electrician’s letter satisfies a lot of policies. Ask your agent what specifically they need before you commit to anything.
Can I just add grounded outlets to fix it?
Putting a three-prong receptacle on a two-wire circuit is worse than leaving the two-prong one alone, because it tells every device plugged into it that a ground exists. Where a circuit cannot be rewired right away, a GFCI device is the code-recognized interim measure, and it has to be labeled as ungrounded.
My attic is insulated and there is knob and tube under it. How urgent is that?
That is the one condition we treat as a near-term item rather than a someday item, because buried live conductors cannot shed heat the way the system was designed to. It does not mean anything is wrong today. It does mean those circuits should get looked at soon rather than at your leisure.
